Tennessee is a land of unique diversity, and its social aspects are no exception. From one area to another, Tennesseans are a diverse and distinctive people, yet with a common identity. One of the linking states between the beginnings of the North and the Deep South, it is a land that historically has been divided between the two. Middle and West Tennessee resembles life in the Deep South, while East Tennessee is more inclined to parts of the North. The notion of a rugged, lone pioneer and later the family farm is often associated with the state's settlement and development. For so many Tennesseans this is their heritage, yet today many people live in cities, where businesses, stores, and factories employ them.
